AHSAA Executive Director Steve Savarese recognizes long-time Central Board members Richard Brown and current Central Board president John Hardin in honor of National Principals Month.
Mr. Hardin has been principal at Hackleburg High School for the past 12 years. Mr. Brown, the principal at Beauregard High School, currently has the longest tenure of any principal in Alabama – currently serving his 48th year.
“Both are extraordinary leaders. They both go above and beyond to make a difference in the AHSAA,” Savarese said. “It is my privilege to thank all our principals across the state for their contributions to the AHSAA’s member schools and students.”
MONTGOMERY – The Alabama High School Athletic Association Central Board of Control unanimously approved Wednesday assistance for Cottonwood High School (CHS), which suffered significant damage during last week’s weather assault on the Wiregrass by Hurricane Michael. The action came during the Central Board’s quarterly meeting at the AHSAA Wednesday.
The Board also approved budgets for the upcoming 2018 Super 7 football championships at Auburn University Dec. 5-7 and the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Football Game scheduled for Cramton Bowl Dec. 17.
David Holtsford of the AHSAA gave the Central Board a preview of the re-designed AHSAA website and AHSAANOW that is planned to be unveiled Nov. 1, and Denise Ainsworth gave an analysis of the AHSAA’s various future media options.
In other Central Board action:
- Heard a report on Super 7 from Knight Eady Sports spokesman Michael McGreevey
- Approved the 2018 Summer Conference Profit-Loss Statements
- Approved clarification of Rule III, Section 15 (Coaching Outside the School Year)
- Approved pictures to be required on all AHSAA-issued cards beginning with the 2019-20 school year
- Heard an update on School Audits and School Catastrophic Insurance
- Received an update on a survey studying officials’ compensation
- Approved dates for future board meetings (Jan. 30, 2019, April 10, 2019 and July 24, 2019)

“I had a chance to visit with one of my favorite heroes, Glenn Daniel of Luverne. The 92-year old coach and World War II vet was the state’s winningest HS coach for many years – finishing his career that spanned from 1947 to 1992 with a 302-169-16 record. In 1991, his next to last season, his team beat Plainview 21-7 in the Class 3A state finals at Luverne’s Glenn Daniel Stadium to win the school’s first state football championship. Ironically, the quarterback on the Plainview team that night was Jeremy Pruitt, the new head coach at the U of Tennessee. His dad Dale Pruitt is the current head coach at Albertville HS. He compiled a 214-94 record in 26 seasons (2 tenures, one for 17 years and one for 9) and is 286-136 and is in his 37th year as a prep head coach (including two years in Georgia).
An incredible leader, Coach Daniel was an integral part of A.G. Parrish HS (Selma)’s fabled 88-game regular season winning streak and played his freshman year in college for Adolph Rupp at Kentucky after he returned from WWII.
He left Kentucky to take over Pine Hill HS (Wilcox County) after his freshman year with a standing invitation to return to UK any time he wanted. He spent the next 47 years as a HS coach. Coach Daniel was 254-135-13 in 38 seasons – and from 1947 – 1967 did not have a chance to participate in the state playoffs. Only 13 of his wins came in the playoffs. He still goes to as many games as he can now – with his grandson usually accompanying him.”
